When to Replace Timing Belt or Chain?
At some point during your vehicles life, the timing belt will have to be changed. The majority of vehicles require that the timing belt be replaced at 100,000 miles. Some cars have timing chains instead of timing belts. Timing chains basically have a much longer life, but can still stretch or break and can be noisy. Your vehicle manufacturer will have specific recommendations when to change your timing belt. The intent is to replace the timing belt before it fails. A lot of vehicles have complicated valves systems that must work in perfect “timing” with the rest of the engine. When the timing belt breaks, the valve system stops and the engine will continue to rotate which can cause significant damage. This happens very fast and without warning.
The Timing Belt & Water Pump Connection
There is another component driven by the timing belt, and that is your water pump. It makes sense to replace your water pump at the same time you are replacing the timing belt. The reverse is also true because when we have to replace your water pump, we have to do almost the exact same work as replacing your timing belt. So typically, timing belts and water pumps are replaced at the same time.
